BETTY'S BAKING SECRET: Heavenly Holiday Baking

Serves: 5

Ingredients

Directions:

Dazzling Decorations
Holiday Quilt Cake: Spread the top of a 13 x 9-inch baked cake with white frosting. Pipe on lines with red or green frosting, dividing the cake into 24 squares. To make a quilt pattern, decorate every other square with green and red candies or sugars.

Holly Berry Cake: Spread the top and side of a layered cake or the top of a 13 x 9-inch baked cake with white frosting. Cut green jelly fruit slices into holly leaf shapes, and place on cake. Decorate with round red candies for berries.

Poinsettia Cake: Spread the top and side of a layered cake or top of a 13 x 9-inch baked cake with white or pink frosting. Cut as many fresh strawberries as you would like into 5 wedges each. For each poinsettia, arrange 5 strawberry wedges (outer side of strawberry facing up and pointed ends facing outward) to look like flower petals on top of cake tuck 3 fresh mint leaves under strawberry wedges for each poinsettia to look like leaves.

Wrap It Up!

Layer cakes and bundt cakes: Buy white cake boxes from a local bakery, or give the cake in a cake server purchased at discount or housewares stores. You can freeze the cake right in the cake server. Or place the cake on an attractive serving plate, wrap the cake and plate with clear cellophane and tie with a colorful ribbon on top.

Cake loaves: Bake cakes in loaf pans remove from the pans and cool, then place back in loaf pans. Wrap loaves, pan and all, in colored cellophane. Or wrap loaves first in plastic wrap and next in a holiday dish towel. For a more special gift, place the wrapped cake in a basket along with a jar of your favorite jam or jelly.

Bars and cookies: Cool bars and cookies completely, then cut and transfer to a pretty paper plate or tray and wrap in cellophane. Or place the treats in decorated boxes, lined holiday tins or baskets.
