Caramel Apple Variations and Recipes To Fit All Your Cravings!

Fall is here!!! My favorite season. We’ve been up in West Yellowstone for 2 weeks and with the cooler weather and thunderstorms and huge amounts of pine trees, it has totally felt like fall and I am HERE.FOR.IT.

When autumn does finally peek its head, I can’t help but start to crave all the autumny tasty things! Pumpkin desserts, hot chocolate- and of course, caramel apples!

While I love caramel apples, they are not always the easiest thing to eat. But there are quite a few ways to enjoy caramel apples (or homages to the flavor) that can still get you in the festive fall mood!

  • Slice the apples before dipping. Such a simple, almost obvious trick, and yet not one I see very often! Slice the apples and stick them on skewers to make caramel apple pops that are much simpler to eat and still super tasty! You can slice them in the traditional way, or you can slice them to have more of the “apple chip” form.
  • In addition to the idea above, rather than just dipping them for guests to enjoy, you could easily create a little caramel apple “bar”. Pre-slice the apples and keep them in lemon juice or Sprite to keep them fresh. Once they are on the skewers, you can use muffin tins or little bowls to provide a variety of dipping options for you guests! Obviously caramel, but some other ideas to add to your spread could be crushed graham crackers, Oreo chunks, white, milk, or dark chocolate, cinnamon sugar, marshmallows, toffee bits, peanut butter, mini chocolate chips, slivered almonds, crushed pecans, pretzel bits, etc.
  • Caramel apple nachos! This is a fun way to enjoy caramel apples around the table with loved ones! Simply pile a bunch of apple slices on a big plate, and drizzle with caramel, white chocolate, cinnamon, Oreo bits, crushed pecans or anything else you love on your caramel apples!

If you want a more non-traditional version of caramel apples, how about one of these? Caramel Apple Sheet Cake, Chocolate Caramel Apple Puppy Chow, or Caramel Apple Cinnamon Rolls? These all sound delicious and would be a tasty way to satisfy your caramel apple cravings!

Caramel Apple Sheet Cake

This delicious apple cake is perfectly moist and has caramel frosting infused in each and every bite! It is heavenly!

Ingredients:
2 cups flour plus 2 Tablespoons flour
2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup butter
1 cup water
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup buttermilk
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups peeled and chopped green apples
1/2 cup butter
6 tablespoons milk
3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/8 cup caramel sauce (I use caramel ice cream topping)

Directions:
In a large mixing bowl, measure flour, sugar and cinnamon and stir to combine. Set aside.

In medium sauce pan combine butter, water, and shortening. Bring to a boil. After mixture reaches a boil add it to the flour mixture and stir to combine. Add buttermilk, then baking soda, then eggs, then vanilla in that order, mixing in between each addition. Stir in apples.

Pour into a 15x13 inch greased jelly roll pan.

Bake at 400 degrees F for 20 minutes, or until toothpick comes out clean from center. Let cool for about 10-15 minutes.

While cake is cooling, make frosting by combining butter, and milk in a medium mixing bowl. Microwave until butter is melted. Add powdered sugar, vanilla, and caramel sauce and stir until smooth. Pour frosting evenly over cooled cake.

Chocolate Caramel Apple Puppy Chow

Ingredients:
8 cups Apple chex cereal
7 Milky Way candy bars
1/2 cup butter
12 cubes
3/4 cup brownie mix or 3/4 C. powdered sugar plus 3 tbs cocoa powder

Directions:
1. Measure out cereal into a large bowl and set side.

2. Melt Milky Ways, butter and caramel cubes together on low heat on the stove. Stir constantly so that the chocolate doesn't burn.

3 Pour over cereal and gently stir until coated.

4. Dump into a large plastic bag with brownie mix and shake well! The cereal might clump together because the caramel is thicker than just chocolate, you can break up the chunks or just leave them as little delicious surprises.

5. Pour onto a cookie sheet to let cool. I chopped up extra Milky Ways for extra color.

NOTE: You can always use regular Chex cereal and call them "Milky Way Muddy Buddies/Puppy Chow"

Easy Caramel Apple Cinnamon Rolls

These Caramel Apple Cinnamon Rolls semi-homemade with a cooked apple filling and homemade caramel frosting! They're SO easy and delish!

Ingredients:
For the Filling:
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 cups diced Granny Smith apples (about 2 medium apples)
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
For the Rolls:
1 can crescent roll dough (8 rolls)
For the Frosting:
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
2-3 tablespoons heavy cream
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a cookie sheet with parchment or a silpat liner.
Melt the butter in a small skillet over low-medium heat. Add apples, cinnamon and sugar. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the apples are just beginning to turn translucent, about 15 minutes. Cool at least 10 minutes.
Unroll crescent rolls on a cutting board, leaving them in the rectangle as much as possible. Press the seams together to form one big rectangle. Spread apples over the crescent rolls. Roll up as tight as possible, slice into 8 equal portions. (It’s best to use a serrated knife to cut them.) Place on baking sheet. You can evenly space them (not touching) or you can place them close together so they bake together, creating a more doughy center (like traditional cinnamon rolls).
Bake until golden on the top, 15-25 minutes, or until cooked through.
While they are baking, make the frosting. Melt butter and brown sugar together and cook for 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and whisk in powdered sugar, then whisk in vanilla and 2 tablespoons cream. Add more cream as needed for desired consistency.
Tip: you can skip making the frosting and serve caramel ice cream topping instead.
