Making Jello Eggs and Memories

Do you have any food smells that remind you of loved ones? For me, the smell of hot jello makes me think of my grandma every time. Growing up, my sister and I were blessed to have a wonderful relationship with my grandparents, and we spent a lot of time with them over the years. My grandma spent a lot of time in the kitchen with us, making all sorts of goodies. I remember making varieties of hard candies, ice cream sundaes, sourdough pancakes- and Jello Eggs.

I distinctly remember my Grandma getting everything set up with her counter full of purple and pink egg molds. We’d make several different colors and mix them to create two-toned eggs and it was so fun coming up with different creations! One of my favorite parts was adding the hot boiling water to the different colored powders and seeing the rich colors form. That hot, fruity sweet smell makes me think of my Grandma to this day!

My sweet grandmother gave me her Jello egg molds this last year. I think she was inspired because she has SEVERAL grandchildren (we’re talking more than 80!), and for some reason she decided to give them to me. She must have known how much those memories mean to me, and I look forward to recreating them with my children (and grandchildren- eventually!).

My kids and I were able to make our first batch of Jello eggs together this past week- and my kids loved it!! They were so excited to see the different colors as we poured the boiling water into various bowls. My 2 year old was giggling from excitement the whole time! He particularly loved stirring the jello mixture as we waited for the powder to dissolve.

Jello is actually a super fun treat to make with kids. It’s colorful, and jiggly and tasty! It’s also extremely easy- no baking or kneading- you just boil water, mix the powder and let it set! The hardest part is waiting for the Jello to chill. But you can always use the freezer to help things move a little faster ;).

With everyone in quarantine, I’ve seen a lot of people using their time to try new recipes and bake more frequently. I’ve had a few friends ask for ideas of what to make because cookies and muffins get old afterwhile…. At least for some ;). Jello jigglers is another great way to keep your kids entertained and have fun in the kitchen! You don’t need any fancy molds- any cookie cutter shapes you have will do. I promise your kids won’t care- they will have a blast, whatever the shape may be!

Do you have any food smells that remind you of loved ones? Any sweet memories from the kitchen you’d like to share? I’d love to hear your comments below!
