March 3 - Dr. Seuss Day!

I don’t celebrate every obscure holiday, but one that I definitely like to have fun with is March 2, Dr. Seuss’s birthday! It's also become a reading holiday- National Read Across America Day, so it’s a great day to celebrate your love of all things reading and books! And especially those that belonged to Dr. Seuss!

My kids LOVE reading Dr. Seuss books. They are silly, witty- and simple enough for my early readers to be able to read on their own! While I could focus on a couple particular favorites, it’s hard to choose just one! Especially when there are so many cute possibilities!

Hop on Pop. This one is perfect for toddlers. All my kids have LOVED this book when they’re about 2 years old. I think it’s because of how simple it is! It’s a fantastic way to increase their vocabulary. You could serve Hop on “Popcorn”, with soda “pop” as a fun snack while you read this classic!

The Cat in the Hat. This is probably the most recognized Dr. Seuss book, by far! And there are SO many ways you can get creative with this book. Serve banana and strawberry kabobs, or stack white and red lifesavers on Oreos, or make red and white pancakes, or strawberry-layered yogurt parfaits- you really could do so many things with this one book alone! And that’s not even including Thing One and Thing Two- utilizing these fun characters, you could get even more creative! Red Velvet cupcakes with blue frosting, strawberries with blue-dyed sour cream, etc. And if you’re going to read The Cat in the Hat, you can’t forget the Cat in the Hat Comes Back- this one is another of my kids’ favorites :).

One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. Another classic! You could eat some colored goldfish crackers while indulging in this fun Dr. Seuss book, or a bag of different colored Swedish fish would definitely be a fun treat to enjoy as well!

Lorax. Even people who haven’t read the Lorax tend to recognize him and his beloved truffula trees! Did you know that Nutter Butters with candy eyes and some yellow frosting mustaches look just like the Lorax? Or you could go with donuts…. Because they’re adorable and delicious!! Truffala trees could be a simple bit of cotton candy on a stick, or you could make rice krispie treats with Fruity Pebbles or even Trix to give them a fun and fruity look, and place them on lollipop sticks to complete the tree look!

Fox in Socks. My kids adore this book. It is full of tongue twisters- and not to toot my own horn, but I’ve gotten pretty good ;). Using a play on words, you could serve “three cheese trees” (stacks of cheese, or even cones holding cubed cheese on toothpicks), or “poodles with noodles” could be pasta of any kind!

Green Eggs and Ham. Can you really have a Dr. Seuss day without some green eggs and ham? ;) Scrambled eggs with lots of chopped spinach or food coloring, or even deviled eggs with avocado or food coloring will definitely give you the “green eggs” you’re looking for! Pair with some slices of ham for a protein-packed way to start the day! And if you want a sweet treat, green M&M’s placed in melted white chocolate sure look a lot like green eggs!

What’s your favorite Dr. Seuss book? I’d love to hear your favorites!
