A Handy Help in Keeping Slabs of Steak off the Bathroom Scale

By Sydney Hill

These are tips from a handout I got once and it is literally pretty handy!

Sometimes we're told to eat certain portions, but it's not always easy to guess how much 3 oz. of meat is, and who wants to throw a slab of steak onto your bathroom scale? Hopefully these will help keep that from happening, while helping you from day to day in cook

ing and preparing dinner plates.

3 oz. of meat:
Is the same size as the palm of your hand.

1/2 cup cooked vegetables or pasta:
Is the same as one cupped hand.

1 cup of raw leafy vegetables or spinach:
Is the same as two cupped hands.

1 oz. of cheese:
Is the same as the length and width of your thumb.

1 teaspoon:
Is the same as the tip of your thumb or index finger (from the knuckle to the end).

1 tablespoon:
Is the same as three thumb or index finger tips.

1 cup of dry cereal or popcorn:
Is the same size as your fist.

1 medium-sized piece of fruit:
Is the same size as your fist.

Hopefully these will help you as you roam about the kitchen, store, a picnic, or wherever you may be eating or preparing meals. And let's admit it, sometimes it's nice to save yourself from doing some extra dishes on those measuring cups. (I hate doing dishes!)
