Halloween Costumes Ideas That Only Require a T-Shirt!

Halloween can be so much fun- but also a little tricky! Some people love to dress up, some don’t. An easy way to cater to both worlds is to use a theme and simple t-shirts! Most people won’t complain if they just have to wear a t-shirt, and if you really get into it, you can have some cute, fun-themed family costumes! Etsy is a great place to look for unique t-shirts, or to get customized ones made.

I know Halloween isn’t everyone’s favorite, but it really is fun to dress up as a family. These simple ideas won’t take too much effort, and they’re sure to be unique! Take your next family dinner as an opportunity to have a conversation about what you’ll be this Halloween!

Here are a few ideas you could use to combine your love of food and dressing up:

  • Favorite drinks. We all have a favorite drink we’re loyal to- Dr. Pepper, Mountain Dew, good ol’ H20- wear a shirt representing your favorite!
  • Different condiments and sauces. People are passionate about their drinks- and their sauces. Represent your favorite dipping sauce! Ketchup, mustard, Chick-fil-a sauce, fry sauce, etc.
  • Really, this concept could apply to so many things! Just pick a category, and have t-shirts made for each individual to represent their favorite. Some ideas: chips (Cool Ranch Doritos, Lays Salt and Vinegar), cookies (Oreo Double Stuff, Circus Animal), ice cream flavors (Cookie Dough, Rocky Road), etc.
  • You could represent foods that are also used as nicknames/terms of endearment- peanut, honey, sweetie “pie”, etc.
  • Be a pizza- but with everyone representing different toppings! A black shirt for olives, red for pepperoni, yellow for cheese, etc.
  • You could each represent food from different countries. Wear a sombrero and carry tortilla chips. A lederhosen with bread and cheese. Or just wear a shirt with the name of a country and carry around a food item associated with that country. It would especially fun and meaningful if you have connections to particular countries! (Like my brother who served in India for 2 years, or my other brother who is going to be serving in Brazil for 2 years starting in December!)
  • You could do a similar concept to the countries, but use food that represents different states in the United States. Wear a Georgia shirt and carry some peaches, Idaho and potatoes, Wisconsin and cheese, etc.
  • Be a family fruit salad! Red shirt for strawberries, green for grapes or apples, yellow for bananas, etc.
  • You could also be an ice cream sundae, and have everyone represent different toppings! Caramel sauce, banana, chocolate syrup, sprinkles, and of course, the cherry on top!
  • You could all dress up as cozy fall favorites- a pumpkin pie, a cup of hot chocolate, apple cider donuts, etc.
  • It’s Halloween- so why not represent your favorite candy? Skittles, Milky Way, Twix, Red Vines- what are you hoping to get in your Trick-or-Treat bag?

What category would you choose for your family?
