I’m sure I am a lot like you are--trying to keep abreast of all that is going on with pandemic and how best to prepare and keep your family safe and fed and healthy, all while not being consumed by it. It is certainly heavy enough that it can really weigh you down. With that being said, today I thought it was high time to just share some fun, fluffy food facts with you!

I’m here to give you a few more wrinkles in your brain because you’re gonna learn some new cool things you’ve never learned before. Now, I got more than I bargained for when I went searching for some fun facts because let me just say that there are now a few foods added to my list of “never eat again” foods because I learned some very unsavory information about a few things haha. But I’m not going to do that to you! This is for fun! This is for brain wrinkles. It’s all about the brain wrinkles, am I right?

Let’s get to it, shall we?

  • The oldest evidence for soup is from 6000 B.C.f and calls for hippopotamus and sparrow meat.
  • Apples belong to the rose family, as do pears and plums.
  • Ripe cranberries will bounce like rubber balls. A nickname for cranberries is actually “bounce berries because they bounce when they’re ripe. In fact, bouncing the berries is actually a way for farmers and consumers to test if they are ripe and ready.

  • The Aztecs used chocolate as a currency.  We all know how much the Aztecs loved their chocolate, but did you know that they actually used cocoa beans as currency? People under Aztec rule could actually use cocoa to pay their taxes.
  • Coconut water can be used as blood plasma.
  • If stored properly, honey will never go bad. Honey is very low in moisture and very acidic: two primary defenses against food spoilage. Bacteria dies almost immediately in a low-moisture and high-acid environment like a sealed jar. This could explain why archaeologists have found pots of honey from thousands of years ago that still looked fresh. Salt, sugar, and raw rice also have eternal shelf life.

  • The Popsicle was invented by an 11 year old boy. In 1905 the Popsicle was accidentally invented by a boy named Frank Epperson, who left a mixture of soda and water in a cup overnight. His mixture froze and he ate his newfound treat.

  • Blackberries help the brain retain new information.
  • Most wasabi is actually just horseradish. About 99% of all the wasabi sold in the United States is actually just horseradish died green. Real wasabi costs $80 a pound, so most restaurants just opt for the fake stuff and their customers are none the wiser. You have to be at a pretty upscale Japanese restaurant to get the real stuff.
  • The largest wholesale purchaser of kale, before it became a craze a few years ago was Pizza Hut. They used the kale to garnish all their buffet tables with the leafy green plant.

  • That burning sensation you get when you eat spicy peppers is a mental reaction, not a physical one. Chili peppers contain a chemical known as capsaicin, which naturally binds to the pain receptors on our nerves. Your brain thinks you are ingesting something hot, so you begin sweating and your face turns red. This is your body’s way of trying to cool you down, even though there is no real temperature threat.

Well there you have it. Some fun, fluffy facts about food! There is plenty more where that came from and sometimes I think simple, fun posts like these are just the ticket for me to relax and forget about these hard things we are experiencing right now. Stay safe and healthy! You are so loved!!
