Smoothie Recipes to Help You Detox

If I’m being completely honest, I’m a little embarrassed to admit how much Halloween candy I ate this year! It didn’t help that a stressful election was only a few days later; this emotional eater definitely had more chocolate than I should have... and my body definitely felt it. After a couple days of eating too much Halloween candy, I felt sluggish, anxious, and weak- my workouts were not nearly as effective! It was a good reminder of why we eat good food instead of junk food!

After eating so much unhealthy food, it’s nice to give your body a little break and “detox”- literally letting our bodies clean out the bad stuff and replenish the nutrients we so desperately need! An occasional treat is perfectly fine- but sometimes we find ourselves overdoing it, and when that happens, there are certain foods you can eat to help nourish your body, recover and get back to tip-top shape!

Apples- They help the digestive system, stimulate bile (which is a good thing!), helps your liver release toxins, and they’re high in fiber- allowing you to clean out the toxins faster. They also help remove toxins and cholesterol from your bloodstream, making them a very effective detoxidant!

Spinach and Kale- Is it any surprise these are on this list? Full of fiber, and packed with nutrients our bodies need- they are nature’s superfoods! And so easy to throw into a smoothie without compromising the flavor. Spinach in particular is high in chlorophyll, which is claimed to be one of the top detoxifying plant pigments- basically, it’s effective!

Beets- This one may not always come to mind, but these pretty veggies are high in antioxidants and pectin- which also help clean out the bloodstream. They’re great for removing toxins! Plus, they turn any smoothie into a gorgeous color. And presentation is pretty important too, right? ;)

Ginger- One of nature’s best medicines! Its anti-inflammatory properties are incredible, and it’s a great agent to help maintain your body’s digestive enzymes. These are great for stomach aches, digestive issues- and detoxing!

Cruciferous vegetables- These include broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and brussel sprouts. They are high in fiber which aids digestion, and have antiviral, anti-inflammatory and anticancer effects!

Other foods include lemons, blueberries, asparagus, avocado, turmeric, cilantro. Seeing a trend? Really, a lot of your basic fruits and vegetables!

Sometimes a recipe makes it a little easier to eat healthier because it takes the thinking out of it! Here are 3 smoothie recipes you can try! Each is a little different, but all of them are packed with nutrition! And made with ingredients you can easily find at the grocery store.
