Ways to Use Leftover Buttermilk

Last month amid all my holiday baking, I made a batch of my mom’s delicious coconut bread. This particular recipe calls for buttermilk- which makes it delicious, but I always end up with extra buttermilk! I absolutely hate throwing out food, so I always try to use up anything I can before it goes bad.

Buttermilk is a great ingredient in so many things- but also kind of a random one! Sometimes, it’s hard to know how to use it up (especially when you buy a ton on sale ;) ). Here are some great ways to use up that extra buttermilk you’re dying to use:

*Salad dressing. There are many recipes that use buttermilk, but it you’re just needing something basic, go get a buttermilk ranch dressing packet from the store! Easy peasy!

*Buttermilk pie. It’s never a bad time of year to have pie, right? Buttermilk pie sounds so boring, but it’s a definite classic at my parent’s home! Simple and delicious! I’ve even included the recipe for you ;).

*Pie crust. Need a really special homemade pie crust to go with your buttermilk pie? Use COLD buttermilk instead of ice water to give your pie crust an extra dose of deliciousness!

*Mashed potatoes. For extra creamy and tasty mashed potatoes, add buttermilk! You can also get away with using less butter with this trick ;)

*Biscuits! Flaky, tender and tasty biscuits are as easy as adding buttermilk ;). And there are so many recipes out there!

*Fried chicken. If you want extra crispy, delicious homemade chicken tenders, dip them in buttermilk and fry them up! Of course, this doesn’t just have to be chicken… anything that needs a crispy, tasty fried coating will do!

*Pancakes. Buttermilk pancakes are a basic oldie- but goodie! It’s hard to go wrong with buttermilk pancakes!

*French toast. Why stop at pancakes?! Dip your bread into an egg/buttermilk mixture for a truly decadent breakfast!

*Buttermilk syrup. Of course, if you’re going to have breakfast food, you’re going to need a killer syrup recipe to pair with it- and I have just the one! This is hands down my favorite syrup recipe.

*Cornbread. You can make a killer cornbread recipe with the help of buttermilk! This is another one with so many recipes available online!

*Quiche. This may not be the first dish to come to mind, but it definitely works! Instead of adding all regular milk to your eggs, substitute just ½ with a little buttermilk to give it an extra special flavor!

*Homemade ice cream! Give your homemade ice cream a special tang by using buttermilk with whole milk and half and half!

What are your favorite ways to use up leftover buttermilk? I’d love to hear them!
