Short-Cut Cinnamon Rolls

I recently saw a poll on Facebook asking which breakfast food we would be willing to give up forever- the choices were pancakes, waffles, French toast, and cinnamon rolls. I was surprised how many people said cinnamon rolls! Those are one of my absolute favorite desserts/breakfast foods ever. However, I think it absolutely depends on what kind of cinnamon roll you’re eating. I’ve had some that are really dry and bland- those I could definitely give up forever. But a good recipe- one with really chewy dough and tons of cinnamon and frosting- now THAT I would have a hard time giving up!

I made my first batch of cinnamon rolls this week for my daughter’s birthday. My mom has an AMAZING dough recipe for cinnamon rolls- they come out chewy and divine and I’ve never thought to look for anything different- why change something that is already perfect? ;)

However, the night before my daughter’s birthday, I was busy wrapping gifts, decorating her cake- and I realized I was going to have a very late night if I stuck with my mom’s recipe. It takes about 4 hours, start to finish- and starting them at 9 at night didn’t sound like a fun idea…. Luckily, moms always come to the rescue, don’t they? I called my mom up seeing if there were any shortcuts I could take- and she gave me another recipe for a much quicker cinnamon roll. She said it was her back-up when she wanted to make cinnamon rolls but didn’t have 4 hours to spend- because the dough is still super chewy and tasty!

Add Recipe to Cook'n

This recipe does require one unique ingredient-- a box of custard mix (like Jello’s flan custard mix). I’ve never actually bought any, but as luck would have it, my grandma recently gave me a bunch of pantry goods because she wasn’t going through them fast enough, and this happened to be one of the items she gave me! Thank heavens or I would have spent 4 hours on cinnamon rolls instead of less than 2….

Now a shortcut recipe is only good if it actually tastes good as well, right? Well this one passed the husband test, so you know it’s at least ok, right? ;) He said he actually likes these better than my mom’s because they were firm enough to hold in your hand like a donut. For me, I always heat mine up in the microwave to get it all melty and chewy anyway, so it makes no difference to me! I’m all about the ooey-gooey-ness of a cinnamon roll ;). Either way, next time you need a batch of cinnamon rolls and you only have a couple hours, this recipe will be a lifesaver!

Back to the original poll, I’m curious- if you have to completely give up one of the following breakfast foods, which would it be?

  1. Pancakes

  2. Waffles

  3. French toast

  4. Cinnamon rolls

Hands down it’s pancakes for me ;). Comment below with your choice! I’m genuinely curious!
