The Great Pie Debate

Is everyone hung over from Thanksgiving? Hopefully it was a wonderful, family and food-filled weekend! One thing we definitely indulged in was pie- because isn’t that what you’re supposed to do on Thanksgiving? ;)

Growing up, my mom always made a huge variety of pies. We always had way more pie than we needed- but that was part of the fun! We had leftover pie for days- and the biggest reason we had so many pies is because my mom always made a huge variety! Chocolate, lemon, pumpkin, buttermilk, orange, peanut butter, chocolate marshmallow, coconut cream- a whole smorsgasboard! But it was hard to leave one out, because they were all so tasty, and we all have different favorites. Needless to say- I love me some pie!

If you read through my family’s list of typical pies (there were always different ones, but those are the ones I remember having multiple years), there’s not really any fruit pies. Lemon and orange pie are fruit flavored, but you’re not really biting into any fruit. My husband’s family is definitely ALL about the fruit pies. In my husband’s eyes, you can’t top a basic apple pie. His mom makes homemade peach pies, razzleberry pies- and typically at Thanksgiving they’d throw in a pumpkin pie.

Whether it’s because of our childhoods, or because our taste buds are just very different, my husband and I have very different opinions on pie. Apple pie is my husband’s absolute favorite…. And to be honest I find it kind of boring! But I can’t get enough of my mom’s lemon pie (with a custard filling!), or any cream-based pie! I’m ALLLL about the custard pies- and my husband thinks they’re just too much.

So, when it comes down to it, what kind of pie consumer are you? Do you go for the fresh fruit pies? Or are you more of a decadent dessert kind of pie eater? Whatever floats your boat, I have 2 recipes here that will please- regardless of which end of the spectrum you fall on. I actually like this apple pie, and my husband is a big fan of this sweet peanut butter pie, so you can’t go wrong with either!

The first is German Apple Pie. It has a perfectly flaky crust (that is actually edible- I generally do NOT like pie crust, but I eat this one ;) ), and the cinnamon sugar filling and cream really add to the flavor of the apples! It’s definitely tasty! Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and it’s quite perfect :).

The second is Peanut Butter Cup Pie. This is a very rich dessert. It goes a long way because a little slice is more than enough to satisfy any sweet tooth. And this pie is DELICIOUS. And really easy to make, which in my mind makes it even better ;). My son actually asked to have this for his birthday instead of cake last year- and I was happy to oblige!

So what kind of pie consumer are you? Do you reach for the fresh peach pie? Or are you more of a banana cream/chocolate custard kind of person?
