1 Place a rack in the center of the oven. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Oil a 9-inch square baking pan.
2 Soak the bread in the milk for 10 minutes. Squeeze the bread to remove the excess liquid.
3 In a large bowl, mix together the beef, bread, eggs, and salt and pepper to taste. Stir in the ham and cheese.
4 On a large sheet of wax paper, scatter half the bread crumbs on a piece of wax paper. Spread half the meat mixture on the paper in a rectangle 8 × 4 inches. Place the two hard-cooked eggs lengthwise in a row down the center. Pile the remaining meat mixture on top, pressing the meat together to form a neat loaf about 8 inches long. Place the loaf in the prepared pan. Sprinkle the top and sides with the remaining crumbs.
5 Bake the loaf about 1 hour or until the internal temperature reaches 155°F on an instant-read thermometer. Let cool 10 minutes before slicing. Serve hot.
