Select 12 large strawberries with stems. Rinse and dry well.
In a small saucepan over very low heat, melt 3 ounces chopped semisweet baking chocolate or 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips with 1 tablespoon solid vegetable shortening stir until blended. Remove from heat and stir until slightly cooled. Dip bottom one-half to two-thirds of strawberry into chocolate, allowing excess chocolate to drip off. Place on wax paper. Chill in refrigerator until set or up to 2 hours. Serve on a chilled plate.
