Bread And Butter Pickles

3 quarts cucumbers thinly sliced small
10 white onions medium, thinly sliced
1/3 cup salt
2 quarts cracked ice
3 3/4 cups sugar
3 3/4 cups cider vinegar
1 1/8 teaspoons turmeric ground
3/4 teaspoon celery seeds
1 1/2 teaspoons mustard seeds


Combine cucumbers and onions sprinkle with salt and cover with cracked ice. Cover with a heavy lid and let stand for 3 hours. Drain thoroughly and rinse well with cold water. Place in a large kettle. Add remaining ingredients and bring almost to a boil, stirring constantly. Do not boil. Pack at once into hot sterilized jars and seal. Process in hot water bath for 5 minutes.

Note: Add 1 minute to processing time for each 1,000 feet above sea level.
