How a Babysitter’s Recipe Became a Family Classic
When Kathy and I were younger, we used to go on a date night every weekend. It was something we looked forward to all week—a little time to reconnect and recharge amid the beautiful chaos of raising five kids.
Most weekends, we hired my Executive Assistant, Barbara William's young teenage daughter, Mary, to babysit. The kids adored Mary. In fact, they still talk about her to this day! And one of the biggest reasons? The meals she made for them.
Mary had a signature dish: Hamburger Helper or Tuna Helper... with a can of corn mixed in. That was her secret ingredient. Simple, sure—but to our kids, it was magic. They absolutely loved it.
Fast forward a few decades, and every Sunday, our kids (now all grown up with families of their own) come over for dinner. It’s one of the highlights of our week. Kathy always makes something special and delicious, and the house fills with laughter, love, and that wonderful smell of home-cooked food.
A few weeks ago, Kathy and I went on vacation and missed our traditional Sunday dinner. We were gone, but apparently, the tradition lived on. One of the kids sent a photo to the family group chat of a box of Tuna Helper with the caption:
“Alright, Mom and Dad are gone. Y’all know what that means.”
It’s funny how a simple meal can stick in our memories for so many years—and bring everyone together again, decades later.
That’s what Cook’n is really all about: making mealtime memorable. Whether it’s your grandmother’s Sunday roast, your spouse’s famous brownies, or yes—even Tuna Helper with corn—it’s worth saving, sharing, and celebrating.
These days, as I’ve been recovering from my knee injury, I’ve also been learning just how important good nutrition is for healing and health. A few friends have recommended adding collagen and peptides to my diet, and I’m realizing that taking care of our bodies through what we eat is one of the best investments we can make.
Cook’n makes it easy to organize those healthy recipes and plan nutritious meals that help you feel your best. But it also helps you preserve those family favorites that keep the memories alive—because food is more than fuel. It’s love. It’s connection. It’s tradition.
So whether you’re whipping up a gourmet feast or opening a box of Tuna Helper with a can of corn… make it memorable. 💛
