The New Buttercream Board Trend!

Have you heard of buttercream boards? They’re one of the latest trends, combining my love of cute boards and cake! Well, I guess technically not cake. But the delicious buttercream part! I first saw this on Instagram, but apparently it’s a TikTok trend that’s taking the baking world by storm!

I made a Halloween buttercream board for my kids and it was so fun to put together! It’s also definitely a lot simpler than decorating a layered cake ;). Because it was Halloween, I decided to use black cocoa to get the blackest buttercream, and I decorated it with some Halloween sprinkles that I had on hand. Super-duper easy.

I paired it with some Trader Joe’s Halloween cookies, graham crackers, Nilla Wafers, Milano cookies, and pretzels.

My kids thought it was a blast! You literally just pick your dipping cookie of choice and swipe it into the frosting.

Super easy, and super tasty! And did I mention- fun? My kids got the biggest kick out of it. It was fun to see what each child’s favorite combination was. And it really got my mind spinning!

You could do so many fun combinations with this trend. The frosting really becomes the star of the show, so you want to pick some really good flavors! It would be so fun to try different flavors- a fresh strawberry buttercream, a maple flavor, cinnamon, even just a basic cream cheese frosting would be superb!

Obviously, dipping choices will depend on your tastes and the frosting flavor you go with, but here are some ideas:

  • Pretzels (for that sweet and salty combo!). Use rods for a thicker dipping stick, or pretzel crisps for a more cracker-like dipping tool!
  • Oreos
  • Graham crackers (my personal favorite- graham crackers and frosting were made to go together!)
  • Animal cookies
  • Fresh strawberries
  • Milano cookies
  • Teddy Grahams
  • Lorna Doones
  • Chips Ahoys or homemade chocolate chip cookies (you could leave whole, or cut into halves or quarters to allow for more dipping!)
  • Brownie bites
  • Brownie brittle
  • Rice krispie treats

And of course, don’t forget the sprinkles! A blob of frosting is just not that cute. Carefully swirl it with your spatula to make it as aesthetically pleasing as you can, and then top with your favorite sprinkles. Or if you truly want to get fancy, use a piping bag and frosting tip to make flowers, pumpkins, or whatever your decorator’s heart desires. But really, you can just keep it super simple with a basic spatula and sprinkles! If you’d like to get even more sweets on the board, feel free to decorate the buttercream with chocolate chips, M&M’s, or any other small sweet!

This is so easy to turn into any kind of holiday board- just switch out the sprinkles to fit the color scheme and use seasonal dipping treats! Maple cookies for a fall-inspired board, Candy canes for Christmas, Peeps for Easter, etc. Let your creativity go wild!

This is a very sweet treat, which makes it go really far, and it’s super simple to put together! What are your thoughts on this new trend? Is it something you’d try? Or does it sound too sweet for your tastes? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Share in the comments below!
