Cookie Tin Time Capsule
By Camille Rhoades

This year, when the Christmas cookies are finally gone and you begin to look back on the past year and forward to another, I have an idea that might just add some family fun to this New Year!

Don’t toss that cookie tin in the garbage just yet! Make it into a time capsule. I know you are wondering what got into my eggnog, but trust me, this will be a fun activity for everyone in your home.

You will need:

  • Cookie tin (or other container); washed and dried
  • Rag
  • Sandpaper
  • Spray paint
  • Paint markers in assorted colors
  • Whatever you plan to fill it with!

Make sure your tin is clean and dry. Then lightly sand the lid and the bottom to get it ready to paint. Wipe it off and then it is ready for spray paint. Make sure to protect the surrounding area by laying newspaper out. Paint the can and let it dry.

Once the spray paint is dry you are ready to decorate your time capsule. Write a message on the top that might include the date now, or the date to be opened, the names of the family members that contributed, and any other information you want saved there.

Let each family member choose a few things to go in the tin. Anything that is important to you NOW could be included. Report cards, news clippings, fad and fashions, things you collect, sports items, photos, and don’t forget a note to each family member telling them how much they are loved and appreciated!

Once your tin is full and well marked, place it in a place you will remember it and make sure to open it on the time you decided. It could be next year, in ten years, or at some other date or occasion you and your family decide on. Whenever you decide it should be opened, there will be plenty of happy memories and laughter when you get there!
