MMM... Masa

Hi my name is Cheree Miller & I have a question for you hopefully you can answer for me because I've sent out e-mails out to different people about masa & nobody will answer my question.

All I'm wanting to know is can you just cook Masa? Like Masa Balls? My daughter loves masa & won't eat tamales with the meat in it & I want to make her some masa balls maybe or something just made out of masa.

I'm new to the tamale. I Love them soooooo much. I just tried them about a month ago in Texas. Now that I'm home I've been looking online to find me a Tamale Steamer & Masa Spreader.

Can please answer my question about How or Can you cook just Masa, It would really come in handy. I hope to hear from you soon.

Thanks in advance,

Cheree Miller

Hi Cheree,

A neighbor of mine from Nicaragua mixed up a batch of masa dough. She then shaped it into balls and then flattened them into discs. Some she stuffed with cheese and others with meat; she also cooked some plain ones. To cook them, she placed the discs on a heated griddle and browned them on both sides. They were delicious. So.. that said, I think you can just cook the masa dough. Here are some recipes for doing so:

Masa Dumplings
Masa Cakes

I've also included a link that I think you'll be interested in... especially near the bottom of the article where it discusses the cooking of masa.

Instead of frying the balls, you can also boil them, as in a soup. Here's an example:

Here's a picture on rolling masa balls:

Hope this helps,

Desi
