Give-Aways

I have spent the last 2 hours reading your newsletter and wonderful recipes. I have already printed a whole bunch I want to try. I love them because they are using ingredients one has on hand. I love that and just wanted you to know how much we appreciate all your hard work in putting together this newsletter. Thank you very much.

SMART Ideas!
Delicious and Affordable Alternatives

by Alice Osborne

From the “Miscellaneous” Section of the Recipe Box

It’s time for dinner and the recipe calls for sour cream. You’re completely out, and so’s your neighbor. What to do? Try this delicious and affordable substitute when there’s no time (or inclination) to run to the grocery store:

Alternative "Sour Cream"

2 Tbsp milk
1 Tbsp lemon juice
1 C creamed cottage cheese

Put ingredients in a bowl and mix until smooth and creamy. Use as a base for dips or anything calling for sour cream. (Yield: 1 C “mock” sour cream.)

Winter weather can bring colds and flu—throbbing heads and achy chests. If sickness strikes this season, try this decades-old, wonder-working kitchen 1st aid—the Mustard Plaster:

1st Aid Mustard Plaster

1 egg
2 Tbsp shortening
1 Tbsp camphor oil
1 Tbsp dry mustard
Flour (to thicken mixture)
Water (to make a spreadable consistency)

Mix well and spread onto clean flannel cloth. Apply to patient’s chest . This natural remedy emits a warmth and an aroma that soothes the lungs and head at the same time. We’ve used this for years in our family and can guarantee comfort and improvement for the typical cold or flu condition. Check periodically…can burn the skin.
