Give-Aways

I have spent the last 2 hours reading your newsletter and wonderful recipes. I have already printed a whole bunch I want to try. I love them because they are using ingredients one has on hand. I love that and just wanted you to know how much we appreciate all your hard work in putting together this newsletter. Thank you very much.

SMART Ideas!
Food-Prep the Easy Way

by Alice Osborne

Here are more quick and easy food preparation ideas...

Instead of cutting rolled cookies — refrigerator or otherwise — slice them with a wire-type cheese slicer. Or, just a piece of thin wire works beautifully. We’ve also used sewing thread. Slices stay round are smoother than when cut with a knife.

To warm meat without drying it to the consistency of sawdust or cardboard, place in a heavy skillet and cover completely with lettuce leaves. Cover tightly with the skillet lid and heat in a moderate oven. The meat keeps its good flavor and moisture.

Cocoa time is coming. Beating the non-instant variety (homemade from scratch can be so much better), beat it with an egg beater and no scum will form on the top. Hot Chocolate cooked in a double boiler will not boil over and may be kept hot for a long time.

If a bit of egg yolk gets into the egg whites, moisten a clean cloth with cold water, touch to yolk and it will adhere to the cloth. No muss, no fuss.

To keep your kitchen shears (or any scissors for that matter) sharp, cut sandpaper once or twice with them.

To prevent your kitchen drawers (or any drawers for that matter) from sticking, rub drawer edges with bar soap and they’ll slide slick as a whistle.

(If YOU have a smart idea, won't you share it? Life is so much easier and we accomplish so much more when we pool our resources. And after all, we're all in this together. So email patty@dvo.com or alice@dvo.com with YOUR Smart Ideas!)
