Do Groceries Seem More Expensive To You Poll Results

In last month's issue of the HomeCook'n newsletter we asked, "Do Groceries Seem More Expensive To You?" I haven't seen any reports but the results of this poll confirm what I suspected. I'm curious to know where the 6 people who voted "No" shop!

  • Yes, they seem a lot higher! (358) 82%
  • Yes, a little (74) 17%
  • No (6) 1%
Total Votes: 438

Comments:

This is really bad for people who live on a fixed income!

I am quite sure that the high price of oil is affecting the price of any food product that has to be transported. Let's work toward renewal energy sources.

living on a fixed income it is very hard I use a lot of the old depression recipes

yes groceries are realy high

yes

yes

by time u pay 4 gas 2 get 2 groc. store_can't afford 2 buy them!!!

It now takes alot more planning and sacrificing "extra's" in order to stay within a monthly food budget. If we are not careful we will overspend on groceries and come up short on funds needed for other items or bills.

things keep rising and makes it impossible to cook like i use to

a lot higher

High grocery prices seem to go along with high gasoline prices.

i AM ON A FIXED INCOME THAT DOES NOT KEEP UP WITH THE TRUE COST OF LIVE INCREASES EACH YEAR. i FIND IT MORE AND MORE DIFFICULT TO BUY THE PRODUCTS i HAVE ALWAYS BOUGHT AND NOW HAVE TO SETTLE FOR LESS DESIREABLE PRODUCTS OR SHOP ONLY FOR SALES. i USUSALLY BUY ONLY SALE ITEMS NOW AND STOCK UP WHEN I CAN . I ALSO HAVE TO SHOP AT MORE THAN ONE STORE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF SALE ITEMS. AMYBE SOME OF THESE COMPANIES THAT RAISE THEIR PRICES, SEEMINGLY INDISCIMINATELY, OUGHT TO SEND OUT THEIR TOP EXECUTIVES TO PURCHASE FOOD FOR AN AVERAGE FAMILY AND SEE WHAT THEIR PRICES ARE DOING TO THE AVERAGE FAMILIES' BUDGET!

in am in vancouver bc all is really high here

I try to buy in bulk for meat and canned goods. Walmart seems to have lower prices on many items, but they don't carry all the specialty items that I need. I try to buy expensive specialty items that have a shelf life a few at a time until my pantry is stocked. This way, I only have to shop for fresh fruit and veggies once a week, otherwise my pantry is stocked with most items that I need.

A full cart of groceries cost close to $100. It used to take at least two full carts for that much money!

they are to expesnive

biggert prices for smaller items

especially fresh produce is extremely high. I have been forced to use frozen.............

It must be very hard on impoverished parents with hungery children!

Prices have soared and sometimes I feel that it has taken the fun out of shopping

It has become much harder , to those of us on a fixed income.

ITS SIMPLY CRAZY!!!!!

their going way out of sight especially milk!

things are getting out of hand

Guess they just want to make sure that the groceries cost more than the gas it took you to get to the store and that's a challenge!

I believe the high cost of Gas is part if not all the reason for the cost increase

Not only are the prices higher, but the quantity of the items are getting smaller. What ever happened to the 16oz can?

higher cost of fuel for shipping sends the prices up, then some stores are exploiting this with gouging.

Gas Prices! Costs more to ship food!

I kind of expected prices would go up to reflect these INSANE gas prices, but when I see cherries at $5.99 a pound I just stand there in shock!

especially meats

I feel that the price of gasoline has caused higher groceries prices. The following could also have an affect: the war, the price of health insurance, the cost of workman's comp insurance, the extremely wet winter in California, and middle men.

I feel that the price of gasoline has caused higher groceries prices.

And they say farm subsidies keep food costs down. I see the farmers with new trucks, tractors, etc.. where are the prices going down at??

I shop 3 or 4 stores to keep prices lower, use coupons, and stock up on store specials.

The price of fuel is causing transpoetation to go up

especially meat

Are we paying for the war?

sometimes the prices are comparable, but the size is quite smaller, maybe the manufacturer thinks the consumer will not notice the smaller size.

price of fresh fruits and vegetables area lot igher

Unfortunately, grocery price continue to climb higher and higher. Milk is ridiculously high and cereal. When hamburger prices skyrocketed, then I knew there is no stopping the increases on groceries. It would be wonderful if the government would finally freeze the grocery prizes, so the economy could have a halfway chance of catching up!

Have you noticed how many farmland acres are now growing black-top and houses? A lot of the very best farm ground in our area was annexed by the city...now there is no more farm ground close-by which equates to highter prices for produce that used to be grown locally!

The price of cheddar cheese has taken quite a jump! I usually buy on sale at $3.99 for two pounds...now it is at least $4.99!

The prices for groceries for a single, senior like myself are unbelivable. You can only cut back so much.

They have us over a barrel, we have to eat. And did you notice that if you get smaller cans of things are are actually more expensive in the long run than getting a normal can.

we need to produce our own

I live in Europe, last visited the States 3yrs ago before this May, and I was almost shocked by the prices now that are sometimes even higher than in Germany!

Government continues to lie about inflation

If they are not higher - the quantity is less! Like 5 lbs of sugar is now 4lbs. Bleach is now less than a gallon.

Like most items today, they keep creeping upward. E.G.: TgCoke and Pepsi use to go on sale at around $2.50 a 12 pack, and regularly priced around $2.98. Now they say they're on sale at $3.50!!!

I'M SURE THEY WILL BLAME THE COST OF GAS AND DIESEL AND THAT IS PROBABLY A REALISTIC STATEMENT FOR MUCH OF THE INCREASE

milk prices are insane as well as butter and produce. No cereal should cost 6 dollars a box either!

prices are up every week

I thought since we no longer have kids at home and we are both retired that it would be a lot less expensive, but this is not so, I still spend $100 or more a week on groceries.

What use to fill a sack for $10 now takes three sacks!

It is getting as bad as gas prices. It directly affects what I purchase at both Costco and Safeway.

and coupons are a lot lower, with most requiring multiple item purchase

I'm spending as much for just the two of us, as when we were raising our 2 sons.

There was no way they were gonna stay the same price with the gas prices going crazy.

We are retired and on a fixed income so the "much higher" prices really do hurt us.

When hamburger went up from $1.98 to $3.98 that is bad!

prices of food goes up, but the wages stay the same

I wanted to buy some specialty cheeses last week and found that the prices had almost doubled. Everything has gone up.

Wages don't go up as fast as food prices or anything else anymore

yes groceries have been going way to much this year wish they would come down for the people who don't make much of a salarie

Grocery stores have us. We HAVE TO EAT.
