Give-Aways

I have been wanting to join for months now. This is the birthday gift I requested from my husband. I can't wait to select my software title that comes with joining and am hoping to get more organizing tips from the weekly letters.

Everyone’s Favorite — Rice Krispies Treats!
by Alice Osborne & Patty Osborne

Can you think of a more fun treat than a Rice Krispie bar? We think whoever dreamed this yummy dessert up ought to get the Nobel Snack Prize. With school back in session, and some of you packing lunches for your kids, we thought it would be fun to share some variations on a tried-and-true theme. Some of these are from our own kitchens, and some are courtesy of the Rice Krispies website, and we thank them with ALL OUR HEARTS for their contribution!

Jumbo Treats
Makes 6 big or 12 small bars

3 tablespoons butter
1 package (10 oz., about 40) regular marshmallows
- OR -
4 cups miniature marshmallows
7 cups Kellogg's® Jumbo Multi-Grain Krispies® cereal

As the first crisped rice cereal, Kellogg’s® Rice Krispies® has been bringing families together in the kitchen for over 80 years.
1. In large saucepan melt butter over low heat. Add marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Remove from heat.
2. Add KELLOGG'S JUMBO MULTI-GRAIN KRISPIES cereal. Stir until well coated.
3. Using buttered spatula or wax paper evenly press mixture into 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan coated with cooking spray. Cool. Cut into 2-inch squares. Best if served the same day.

Microwave Directions:
In microwave-safe bowl heat butter and marshmallows on HIGH for 3 minutes, stirring after 2 minutes. Stir until smooth. Follow steps 2 and 3 above. Microwave cooking times may vary.

Notes: For best results, use fresh marshmallows.
1 jar (7 oz.) marshmallow creme can be substituted for marshmallows.
Diet, reduced calorie or tub margarine is not recommended.

Store no more than two days at room temperature in airtight container. To freeze, place in layers separated by wax paper in airtight container. Freeze for up to 6 weeks. Let stand at room temperature for 15 minutes before serving.

Peanut Butter Cocoa Rice Bars
Serves 12

Same Recipe for Cocoa Bars above, but add ¾ C peanut butter to the melted butter and marshmallow mixture. You may need to add an extra ½ C of rice cereal—play it by ear. We top them with chocolate frosting. These are our favorites.

Cherry Valentine Rice Bars
Serves 12

We use the same recipe as the Jumbo Bars above, but we add ½ C cherry pie filling to the butter/marshmallow mixture and a little more rice cereal to hold things together. We use a heart-shaped cookie cutter, and voila! VERY good.

Kool Aid Rice Bars
Serves 12

Again, the same recipe as the Jumbo Bars above is used, but this time add a packet of your favorite Kool Aid to the butter/marshmallow mixture. Lemon is an tasty and unexpected flavor.

Caramel Rice Bars
Serves 12

Yes, you guessed it, use the Jumbo Bars recipe but this time add ½ to ¾ C caramel topping (or melt Kraft caramel candies—1 C) to the butter/marshmallow mixture. You may need to add a little extra cereal to hold it all together. Just experiment.

Other Brilliant Ideas!

  • Add 1 to 2 C chocolate chips to cereal and mix well (NOT to melted butter/marshmallow, but to the cereal)

  • Add 1 to 2 C Reese’s Pieces to cereal and mix well. And on it goes—any candy (especially chewy stuff) works well.

  • AND, here’s a nice flavor change: Add some Carnation Malted Milk powder to the butter/marshmallow mixture. Experiment. We like a strong flavor, so we added ¾ C.

  • AND, for an icing for the Kool Aid or cherry pie filling bars, we made a butter-cream icing with cream cheese. OH, these were GOOD!
