Give-Aways

I have spent the last 2 hours reading your newsletter and wonderful recipes. I have already printed a whole bunch I want to try. I love them because they are using ingredients one has on hand. I love that and just wanted you to know how much we appreciate all your hard work in putting together this newsletter. Thank you very much.

Holiday Story by Chef Beth

Hi all. My most memorable holiday was at Thanksgiving (& then again at Christmas later in life... read on...) when I was about 5 years old. I don't know how many of you are old enough to remember LIFE magazine before it took it's hiatus from publishing. But if you do remember, you will remember the last edition to be published had a center layout of a photo of a large family posing in the likeness of the famous Rockwell painting of the grandfather carving the turkey with the family gathered around the table. That was my family! It was loads of fun, but weird we thought as kids. In order for it to be published for Thanksgiving we had to shoot it in July! All of us little kids were seated on chairs & told to lean way in like we were anxiously awaiting our slice of turkey. My younger brother, Bret, leaned way in & promptly slid off his chair & under the table! He climbed back up onto the chair red as a beet & tried again. He was only 3 at the time. We got all the photos done, & then we were told if we wanted to, we could eat the dinner. Well by that time it was all ice cold! We had to reheat it all before we could enjoy it.

I never received a copy of that magazine. When I moved to Montana long ago (in December) & cleaned out the old bunkhouse here on the ranch I came across boxes & boxes of old LIFE magazines. Inside the one of the boxes was a copy of that last issue with our family photo spread in it. It was the best Christmas present I ever got, & nobody picked it out for me! I think my grandfather was watching from up above & wanted me to find it. I still have it, although it is in a special case so the pages cannot be handled to preserve it. Some day I will pass it on to my granddaughter & hopefully it will stay in the family for generations to come.
