Boil onion in a small amount of water until tender. Cut cod in 1/4 -inch chunks; add to the onion. Cook over medium heat for about 5 minutes; do not drain. Add 1 1/2 cups milk; heat. In a bowl add 1/2 cup milk to 1/4 cup flour; beat with a wire whisk until smooth. Add to the cod mixture; stir and cook until sauce thickens. Add salt. In a small bowl beat egg, add some of the cod sauce, and stir; add to the rest of the sauce. Stir and cook another 2 or 3 minutes. Serve sauce over boiled or baked potatoes; top with plenty of butter and pepper.
