8 1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup baking powder
1 tablespoon cornstarch (to keep mixture dry)
1 tablespoon salt
2 cups vegetable shortening solid

1/3 cup Chef Pastry Mix
1/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup oats
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon ground
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg ground
3 tablespoons butter or margarine
6 cups apples peeled, cored, and thinly sliced tart cooking
2 tablespoons lemon juice fresh
1/4 cup sugar
Cream or ice cream (optional)

* Measure dry ingredients into a large bowl; mix well. Sift mixture into another large bowl. With a pastry blender; cut in shortening until mixture resembles cornmeal. Store in an airtight container in a cool dry place up to 3 months. Heat oven to 375° F. Combine mix, 1/3 cup sugar, oats, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cut in butter or margarine until crumbly; set aside. Toss apple slices with lemon juice; spread in bottom of a greased 8-inch square pan. Sprinkle with 1/4 cup sugar. Sprinkle topping over apples and bake for 35 to 45 minutes or until apples are tender. Serve warm with optional heavy cream or ice cream.
