I love that and just wanted you to know how much we appreciate all your hard work in putting together this newsletter. Thank you very much.

A "Honey" of a Discovery!
by Alice Osborne

Every once in awhile, we come across something on the Internet that’s just too good to keep to ourselves.

Case in point: The Bee Folks. Here you’ll find delicious recipes using honey, pure beeswax candles (at some of the best prices around), honey FAQs, information about Bee Clubs and beekeeping, and the latest on honey and health.

We LOVE this site and think you will as well. And here at DVO we’re all about encouraging and supporting other family-owned, family-oriented, health-promoting businesses.

So check ‘em out, and if you contact them or buy from them, let them know DVO thinks they’re great! Here’s their background in a nutshell and a couple of their recipes from their site:

The Bee Folks is a small family-owned dedicated to the enlightenment of folks about the importance of honeybees. They were introduced to honeybees in 1997, when they noticed that their small, backyard garden had five tomato plants, but only three tomatoes all summer long.

Upon researching, they found that the honeybee population is all but dieing out. So they immediately started two hives of their own in the Baltimore, MD backyard. By the end of summer, they had three hives (the bees outgrew their first hive), and ten years later they now have a total of 18 hives.

Their business outgrew their nice little suburban house so they relocated to a 2 acre homestead in Mount Airy, MD, in 2004 and we are slowly expanding their new operations. Lori (“Mrs. Beekeeper,”) quit her fulltime job in 2006 to help this family business expand and be hive-thriving (I made that “hive-thriving” up :).

NO-BAKE PEANUT BUTTER COOKIES
This is so simple and easy to make, a child can do it. They are also so addictive, you cannot eat just one! Very similar to peanut butter cups, and much less expensive....

1 cup peanut butter
1 cup dry powder milk
1 cup honey
granulated sugar (or coconut, or nuts, or chocolate....)

1. Thoroughly mix all ingredients.
2. Refridgerate until firm.
3. Roll into bite-size balls.
4. Roll in sugar.
5. Eat.

HONEY BUTTER

This is another simple recipe that is a wonderful condiment for biscuits and breads. If you are feeling Martha-Stewartish, you can even place this into a mold, chill it, and unveil it just before the guests arrive!

Sweeter honeys are recommended. Orange Blossom is the sweetest, but Fireweed already has a nice buttery taste. You can try adding any of the berry honeys (Blueberry, Cranberry, or Blackberry) for a little zing, and even Tupelo should work well.

Important note -- this will last approximately 1 week in the refrigerator. Raw honey has enzymes in it that will cause the butter to turn after this period. Therefore, it is recommended to make this recipe in small batches, as needed.

1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup honey (keep away from the dark ones, choose something sweet or spicy)

1. Whip butter and honey together thoroughly.
2. Refrigerate (molded if desired) until firm.
