Have you ever noticed that managers of winning sports teams do not wait for great players to come try-out for the team. They go out and recruit them!
Similarly, managers of successful companies do not sit and hope for good people to walk through the door to fill out job applications to fill key positions in their company. They go out and recruit great people!
Unfortunately, in our country we do not recruit great people to run our government. In fact, often times, our system attracts the wrong kind of people and we are forced to choose from a group of candidates who applied for the job on their own. Most of the time, these are self-interested people who are seeking public office for their own personal ambitions. Most of them have made a career out of being a politician. When elected, they take steps to ensure their re-election and to increase the power of their political party.
Even the political candidates with the best intentions eventually succumb for two simple reasons: First, in order to win elections, politicians must cater to the desires of special interest groups for support. Second, in order to win elections, they must raise money to fund their campaigns. Accepting political contributions always comes with strings attached. Most politicians will say or do just about anything to get elected! Even the best people eventually compromise their values so much that pretty soon they become just like every other politician.
A recent Rasmussen poll asked who could do a better job in Congress: the current group of elected officials or a group of citizens randomly selected from the phone book. The results were overwhelming in favor of the random group of citizens. How crazy is that? Call me crazy because I totally agree.
Our current politicians and the ones we will elect next month will continue to screw up this country! They will continue to meddle in the affairs of the free market system and when they mess it up, they will blame it on capitalism, suggesting that a greedy CEO or evil corporation is at fault and then they will recommend greater government regulation and suggest that the solution is a new government program!
So...how do we fix this problem? How do we recruit good politicians and how do we keep good people from becoming corrupted by the system? Seriously, what honest, successful, person would want to even run for political office?
I believe there is a solution and that to seek out the best people. We need to find people who are successful in the private sector. We need to recruit honest people by simply asking them to serve their country for four or six years for free. We will only support people who pledge to accept NO pay for their time and NO donations for their campaigns.
Impossible? If thousands of Americans asked you to serve your country for free for four or six years with other such Americans with the sole purpose of fixing what's broke in government, ensuring peace, and saving this country for our children, grand-children, and future generations, I bet you would do it. Imagine, in the next election, if hundreds of thousands of people wrote in your name and you won the election. If you were given the opportunity to fix obvious problems in this country and if you were in a position financially to do it, I bet you would serve for free. I would do it. You would do it and I bet that the most intelligent, successful, honest, Americans would do it as well. And, we would wear those years of service as a badge of honor.
Our Founding Fathers did not serve this country for money nor for power nor to advance any kind of political agenda. In fact, after having just revolted against an oppressive government, the number one priority of our Founding Fathers was to ensure that their new government wouldn't become too powerful and eventually usurp the rights of the people. Unfortunately, their greatest fear is being realized!
We have a crippling federal deficit that is growing daily, a federal budget that is out of control, and a whopping tax rate of 50%. The government has taken control of banks and major financial institutions and is intervening in every aspect of the private sector. We have become just what the Founding Fathers feared. We are practically a socialist country!
We are told that we, as Americans, don't save enough money...that we charge too much on credit cards...that our appetite for stuff is too great. Guess what, that stuff is called the cost of living and many people are unable to pay it because of the 50% tax rate and the burden that our government puts on our shoulders! Many people have to use credit cards just to get by...let alone save money!
Many of our wives are forced to send our kids to day care and to enter the work force just to provide for our families. Financial stress is the number one cause of divorce and the divorce rate is growing higher and higher every year. The consequences of taking the mother out of the home and the break-down of the family unit are going to be even more devestating to this society in the near future if something doesn't change!
We need to take back our country! Deep down inside, you know that it's possible. You know how different and how much better life could be. Can you imagine what this country would be like if our leaders got our country's financial house in order? Imagine if we had greater transparency and accountability in our government.
Things could be so much better even if they just took a few simple steps. For example...
Welfare
Did you know that welfare fraud accounts for 30% of our public assistance funds? And yet, the politicians want to send more money to this disfunctional program! It's ludicrous! Imagine if we didn't steal the dignity of the poor and cripple the less fortunate with hand-outs but gave them a hand-up instead. What if we helped to educate them and hired them instead.
War in Iraq
Imagine if we freed the people of Iraq and toppled the dictator Hussein in a matter of months at a fraction of the cost. We could have done it and saved hundreds of billions of dollars if we would have stopped the political correctness and taken the hand-cuffs off of ours soldiers sooner. Imagine if those funds were used to pay down the national debt instead!
Foreign Aid
Imagine if we stopped sending money to our enemies in the form of foreign aid! What an idea!
Illegal Immigration
Imagine if we built a fence to secure our border. You wouldn't leave the doors to your house open at night would you? Even if you wanted to help the homeless, you wouldn't allow them to walk in & out of your house at will, would you? Even if they were willing to wash the dishes, clean the toilets, and do other jobs that nobody else in your house wanted to do, you still wouldn't do it. And yet, that is just what we're doing on the border.
As the saying goes, "good fences make good neighbors." I think we could pass a bill to build a fence on the border on one sheet of paper, don't you? I'm so tired of pressing "1" for English! And, do you know what kind of burden the illegal immigration problem puts on our health care system alone? Think about how many billions of dollars we could have saved if we had fixed this problem twenty years ago. And, by leaving this illegal avenue open, we are doing a disservice to those immigrants.
Crime
I have an idea...instead of paying for criminals to watch TV and lift weights in jail while other criminals are set free by the courts simply because our prison system is over-crowded, what if we put these people on the border in tents to build the fence for us and gave them an opportunity to pay back their debt to society! Then, we would have more space in prison to put more criminals behind bars and stop crime.
When I was a kid, I ran through the fields near my house with my dog, built tree houses, and walked a mile or two to a friends house. Today, Kathy and I are afraid to let our kids out of our sight! Sex offenders and pedophiles are slapped on the wrist and set free! Then they tell us that our kids are fat and lazy because they just sit inside and watch TV and play video games all day. This is destructive to our society and it must stop! Let's make our streets safe for kids again!
Education
In my state, the tax payers spend $7,000 per student per year to educate our kids. That means, to educate the 30 students in my son's 5th grade class we're paying $210,000 ($7,000 x 30)! I'm trying to imagine $210,000 stacked on the teacher's desk. Where is all this money going???? The teacher only makes $30,000 to $40,000 per year! The building was paid for 20 years ago! Where is the remaining $170,000 going? Seriously! Why are the teachers who educate these 30 students satisfied with only 16% of the money that we as tax-payers are giving to educate these students? Seriously! If you are a teacher, please explain this to me!
According to the politicians, the solution to our failing education system is to throw more money at it. That means higher taxes and greater government intervention! Wrong! It won't work. It hasn't worked...we've tried it. That's what we've done for the last 50 years!
What if we set free the innovative powers of the American entrepreneurial spirit and let the forces of the free market system have a chance at it? Pick any 30 students in the worst area of some inner city and give me $210,000 (that's $7,000 per student) and in one school year (that's only 9 months!), I bet I will do a better job of educating them than any public school on earth.
First, I will interview teachers and recruit the best of the best in the area and offer to double his/her wages by paying a base plus a hefty commission based on the class' progress throughout the year ($80,000). I will buy each student a laptop computer as a tool to help educate them and offer to let them keep it under certain conditions as a way to motivate them ($15,000). I will rent a nice studio room in a location closest to all of the students (1 year lease: $10,000). After utilities and other miscellaneous supplies, I still have $100,000 left over! It's a win for me. It's a win for the teacher. It's a win for the students. And, it's a win for America!
Inevitably, a competitor will appear to challenge me. Someone will see this opportunity and think of a better way to educate these 30 students. If the parents have the choice between sending their child (and the $7,000 from the state) to my school or to the new school, I will be forced to innovate. The wage for the best teachers will go up even higher! Those who produce the best results will get paid even more! It's an even bigger win for the teachers. All of the teachers will begin to innovate. They'll take a great deal of interest in these 30 students! They will be highly motivated to see them succeed! With two great schools to choose from, it's a win for the children and for the parents. And, it's a huge win for America!
Can you imagine the excitement! Can you imagine the enthusiasm and the innovative ideas? Can you imagine how much better America will be with better educated citizens? Wow!!! And is this idea really so foreign? After all, we're using public funds to pay for students to attend private colleges and universities right now and it has worked out very well!
Conclusion
Look, these are just a few ideas from a regular guy. Imagine if we took the best and brightest and most successful people in America and put them in a room together to solve some of America's most pressing problems! Can you imagine it? Wow!
Their first step will probably be to get government out of the way. The American people are like a tiger in a cage. The burden of our government is like a chain around our neck! If we free the American people and turn these problems over to the private sector where capitalism and the forces of the free market system flourish, we can fix these problems and make this country great!
Instead, our leaders are taking us the other direction! Our politicians took legal action to force lending institutions to loosen their lending requirements in order to give loans to the poor and unfortunate people of this country; people who could not qualify for a loan because the politicians felt like it was un-American to deny someone the opportunity of owning their own home! To avoid taking responsibility for the financial calamity that their actions have caused, the politicians are now blaming Capitalism by calling for greater regulation and government intervention. They demonize "greedy" CEO's and blame the evil Corporations!
Their solution to the problem that they created was the $700 billion emergency bail-out bill that was 450 pages long! If our Constitution was written on one page, the foundation of this country which has served us for hundreds of years, why was this bill 450 pages long? That's because of the unbelievable ear-marks and unrelated pork barrel spending. The bill even gives ACORN a 4% fee out of every home loan going forward. Our politicians put their own special interests above the interests of the American people! I think the interests of the American people should be special to our politicians, don't you? I think a bill like this could have been written on at least one page, don't you? Maybe it shouldn't have been written at all!
The bill just furthers the politician's efforts to re-distribute wealth in order to achieve fairness. This is called Socialism and here's a news flash: IT DOESN'T WORK!
It was not a government program that made this country great! Our great, great grandparents did not come to this country for certain entitlements like welfare, free healthcare, or the right to own a home (even if they didn't qualify for a loan). They came to this country because they wanted freedom from oppressive governments. They wanted to be free to pursue the unalienable, God-given rights that this country offered such as Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.
They worked hard. They were creative and innovative. They were highly motivated. They were inspired! They didn't demonize the rich and take their money in the name of 'fairness'...they just wanted the opportunity to become like them! When you free a people and give them the opportunity to pursue their goals, the results can be fantastic! In this case, the result was the creation of the greatest, most powerful nation in the world.
This won't be the greatest country for long if something doesn't change. This country is fixable. The challenges we face are overcomeable. But, it is up to you and me and the rest of the American people to do it.
Unfortunately, we can't do it by just being good people and living right each day (although...that is very good advice and I highly recommend it for everyone). We need to unite our voices and frankly, I'm not quite sure how to do that. However, when I look back at history, movements like this always started at the grass roots level through education and communication. The truth will set you free. History also tells us that those who seek for power over the people have always tried to stop communication and the spreading of the truth about what is going on.
In this day and age, with the Internet at our fingertips all you have to do is forward this to a friend or two or fifty. If anything that I have said makes sense, share this. If that's all that you did, maybe our combined efforts will make a difference some day soon! Maybe I should write in your name and you should write in mine in the next election! Forward this to your friends and then let me know what you think!
